The Raundal Ridge is the perfect mountain range for freeriding!
The Raundal Ridge is the perfect mountain range for freeriding! Majestic red-pine forest, waterfalls, alpine mountain tops, and stunning views. On a clear day you can see the fjord of Hardanger and the glacier of Folgefonna in the distance. Within this playground there is something for everyone! A lot of the terrain around the Raundal ridge is confusing or hidden making most skiers stick to the “normale routes”.
On the video we see Julen Sarasola, (skier and filmer) following Diego Setien in Olsskavlen 1576. Julen, Diego, Gon, Aitor and Peru have been friends with Carlos since 2016 when they started skiing together the big mountains of the Pyrenees, especially the ones of the Val d’Aran. In 2024 they came on a visit to Voss to see what was all about.
Freeriding the Raundal ridge is a modern take on the classic ski tour across the Raundal Ridge. This tour focuses on efficient progress, in contrast to a freeriding day where our goal is to find the most attractive descents.
Some of our favourite descents:
-Skipadalsnuten N couloir
-Olsskavlen NW Couloir
-Olsskavlen NW Spur
-Skorafjellet to Skipadalen via couloir
-Fribottseggi NW Couloir (to Fribotnen)
-Fribottseggi N Couloir (to Dyrebotnen)
-Seldalen (from Rastaklov or Olsskavlen)
-Trollaboten
Freeriding the Raundal Ridge means planning complex ski trips in consequential terrain. Raundalsryggen has a specific micro climate that tends to make avalanche conditions vary from the general avalanche bulletin of Voss. Local knowledge, and/or advanced skills in judging snow are required for travelling on safety in this terrain. This is something we are well aware off. In april 2021, Øystein and Carlos, were in the terrain north of Raundalsryggen checking the conditions some days before an advanced course in ski alpinism. That day we remotely tryggered a big slab. Here you can read more of that incident. The blog is in Norwegian, but hopefully you can understand it with the help of the pictures and google translate.
